Abstract

In this paper we present the problem of locating a facility when competition from another facility is taken into consideration. Two problems are addressed here. One is the location of a new facility that will attract the most buying power from an existing facility. The other is the location of a facility that will secure the most buying power againts the best location of competing facility to be set up in the future.

Competitive location models: A review

The objective of facility location models is to maximize the profit or minimize the cost of a company that wishes to expand or enter the market. The market share captured by facilities is a function of the distances to the facilities and their attractiveness. The analysis involves how to estimate the market share captured by facilities, where to locate new facilities, how to determine their attractiveness, and reactions of competitors to the actions of locating a facility.
This invited review is dedicated to honor Tammy Drezner and her significant contributions to the field of competitive location. Her main innovative contributions include ways to find best locations for competing facilities, methods to assess their attractiveness levels, and significant modifications to the classic gravity model.
The research on competitive facility location is still evolving and there are many aspects yet to be analyzed. A list of ideas for future research is proposed.
How consumer preference determines site selection in a metropolitan setting: Analysis of retailer perspective to stay ahead of the competition in the aftermath of a large-scale crisis

In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, F & B retailers in emerging markets are analyzing shifts in customer preference to create effective store expansion strategies. Key attributes in site selection were identified by a mixed methods survey of customers and retailers (non-alcoholic beverages); there were 370 respondents in the quota sampling (customers) and 83 respondents in the census sampling (retailers). Descriptive statistics was used to rank the top attributes influencing store selection; the attributes were grouped into two sets of components by EFA which may offer alternative ways to find reliable data for site selection; all data were processed by SPSS.

This paper surveys the history of location models. Starting with the earliest contributions in mathematics, it follows the journey of the topic through its reincarnations in geography and finally in operations research. While we attempted to highlight the major milestones, we do not claim this survey to be comprehensive. Being the 50th anniversary of EURO, we highlighted the contribution of some of the most active European groups.
Maximizing political vote in multiple districts

This paper models a resource allocation problem in the political context. Voters and political candidates of two parties are positioned in each of n given electoral districts. We assume that each voter will vote for the candidate he is more attracted to. This attraction is modeled by an attraction function. Each of the parties now attempts to allocate a finite budget to maximize their objective, which is either the popular vote or the number of districts, in which the party has a majority. Individual scenarios are examined with respect to leader-follower solutions and Nash equilibria. The paper then describes a dynamic model that successively allocates existing funds plus additional donations to candidates in different electoral districts.
IoT-based location and quality decision-making in emerging shared parking facilities with competition

Shared parking firms offer a double-sided platform for parking space sharing. Many of these firms provide differentiated service levels to both suppliers and buyers. This new phenomenon in the parking industry materialized thanks to recent innovations in IoT-enabled automation and electric vehicle charging technologies. We study shared parking firms. Specifically, we formulate the firm's location and quality decision problem by using a multiplicative interaction model with competition. A non-cooperative game renders the optimized quality levels and location selections at Nash equilibrium in the presence of competition. We illustrate managerial insights with a small-sized problem. For industry practitioners, we propose a tailored branch and bound based exact algorithm and a problem-specific genetic algorithm for large-sized problems. Simulated computational results confirm the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed shared-parking decision support model.
