Abstract

The micelle size distribution of two poly (oxyethylene) nonylphenol nonionic surfactants with mean ethylene oxide numbers of 9 and 30 has been investigated using a new development of the ultrafiltration technique. Fractionation of the micellar solution by various membranes reveals details of the distribution of micelle sizes present at any given concentration. Results are compared with light scattering measurements from which concentration dependent mean aggregation numbers are derived. The results are discussed in terms of several current models of micelle formation.

As it is seen, our method differs from the previous ones since in principle it uses an intermolecular structural geometric criterion combined with the Hoshen-Kopelman algorithm to identify and classify the clusters and certainly to οbtain the CSD by averaging over all sampling configurations within a certain time frame. We close our remarks concerning the general features as well as the usefulness of the CSD, by noting that its functional form still remains nowadays the basic origin in studies of the structure and dynamics of the micellization process in such systems, despite the fact that its entire curve, i.e. the two different branches in shape which form together the whole behavior of a CSD with Nag at CT ≥ CMC, cannot be completely confirmed experimentally [101]. It must be pointed out however that such a shape of the CSDs has been already predicted in the framework of a few recent CS studies (although in most cases the characteristics of the corresponding CSDs obtained lead one to ascertain that they have reached a pseudo-equilibrium intermediate state, since they have not been estimated in fully equilibrated systems) aiming to investigate the self assembly process and related properties of various surfactant solutions.
