Abstract

Measurements are reported on dc Kerr response and the pretransitional behavior in (p-ethoxybenzylidine)-p- butylaniline (EBBA) - (p-methoxybenzylidine)-p-butyl aniline (MBBA) liquid crystal mixtures at temperatures above nematic to isotropic transition temperature. The observed dependence of Kerr constant on (T-T☆)−1 is found to be in good agreement with the predections of Landau-de Gennes model.

Characterization of liquid crystals (LCs) properties is one of the most interesting research topics in development and improvement of these materials for particular applications. Many researchers have studied properties of different classes of liquid crystals [1–8]. Importance of research on liquid crystal synthesis and characterization can be assigned to their widespread application in display technology, as well as to their gradually extending applications into electro-optical devices.
