Abstract

The behavioural scientists Eysenck and Cattell have much in common, having investigated intrapersonal psychological structure, albeit at different levels in its hierarchical structure. Eysenck has studied the personality domain in terms of a typological model involving a small number of important superfactors. In constrast, Cattell has typically resorted to analyses of a considerably larger number of primary factors. While both approaches are clearly complementary, nevertheless, little research has been undertaken into intermodality superfactors. The present study, therefore, examines Cattellian intermodality superfactors across the normal personality trait, mood state and motivational dynamic domains in the hope of elucidating superfactors additional to those already documented by Eysenck.

Dimensions of personality: 16, 5 or 3?-Criteria for a taxonomic paradigm

It is suggested that what is needed in personality research is a paradigm which would give rise to coordinated research work (“normal science”) directed in part at the elimination or clarification of anomalies. Several such paradigms have in fact been suggested, so that clearly what is needed is a set of criteria to decide between them. Several such criteria are put forward, and an attempt is made to apply them to three major systems, namely Cattell's 16 PF, the Norman “big 5”, and the Eysenck PEN system. It is suggested that if agreement could be reached on these criteria, we might be able to approach agreement on the substantive issue of what are the major dimensions of personality.
Interset relationships between the eight state questionnaire and the menstrual distress questionnaire

The interrelationships between emotional/mood states and related psychophysiological states was examined in terms of the measurement overlap (redundancy) across two multidimensional psychometric instruments. Subscale similarities and differences across the Eight State Questionnaire (8SQ) and the Menstrual Distress Questionnaire (MDQ) were studied using multiple regression procedures on a sample of 370 undergratuates. In addition, canonical-redundancy analyses were employed in order to estimate the quantitative overlap across the two self-report instruments. Although the two instruments were designed to measure somewhat different entities (mood states and psychophysiological symptoms), it was hypothesised that some interset commonalities would emerge in regard to the normal female monthly cycle. Indeed, the total redundancy of the 8SQ given the MDQ was found to be 0.46, while the redundancy for the MDQ given the 8SQ was 0.31. Clearly, some of the MDQ subscales measure psychological states, quite apart from those subscales which measure menstrual cycle symptoms. Only six of the eight MDQ subscales served as significant predictors for the 8SQ, while seven of the 8SQ subscales were significant predictors of the MDQ subscale scores. Evidently, menstrual cycle symptomatology and associated mood states are inextricably connected.
Re-examination of the major personality-type factors in the Cattell, Comrey and Eysenck scales: Were the factor solutions by Noller et al. optimal?

A recent higher-order factor analysis of the Cattell, Comrey and Eysenck personality scales by Noller, Law and Comrey (1987) in the J. Person. Soc. Psychol. 53, 775–782 provided a useful account of the number and nature of normal personality-type dimensions measured within the questionnaire, self-report domain. The analyses reported were based on an exemplary sample of Australian adults, matched carefully across sex, age, and social class, thereby providing a sound basis for investigating personality structure. Noller et al. extracted and rotated seven separate factors using procedures suggested by Comrey (A First Course in Factor Analysis. Academic Press, New York, 1973), thereby attaining moderate approximation of the final rotated solution to maximum simple structure. In an attempt to improve on the approximation to simple structure criteria, the present study reanalysed the Noller et al. data set and presents the results of a 6-factor oblique solution derived from the intercorrelations of all 33 variables included in the Noller et al. study, as well as a 5-factor solution based on the intercorrelations of the 25 personality scales alone. The present findings agree strongly with the conclusions of Noller et al. that there are indeed five major personality-type dimensions within the normal trait sphere, but suggest a slightly different interpretation of these structural dimensions.
Use of change scores in redundancy analyses of multivariate psychological inventories

Both canonical and multiple-regression redundancy analyses were computed on the 20 separate subscale change-scores for the Eight State Questionnaire (8SQ) and the Differential Emotions Scale (DES-IV), using a sample of 212 undergraduate students. In comparing the measurement overlap of the two measures, it was important, since state-change dimensions were of interest, that across- occasions difference scores be used rather than single-occasion absolute scores. Viability of this approach was demonstrated and only minor redundancy was evident for the 8SQ and DES-IV instruments. On the present evidence, it appears that both inventories are tapping essentially discrete psychological variance (allowing for trait contamination) and that probably neither instrument alone is an adequate measure of the total ‘mood-state sphere’.
