Field calibration of a recording turbidity meter

Abstract

The methods in common use for collecting data on suspended solids concentrations in streamflow and for calculating total load are either inaccurate or unnecessarily expensive. Recording turbidity meters offer a potential solution to these problems when used in association with a calibration between suspended solids concentrations and turbidity. In this paper a method is described for the field calibration of a recording turbidity meter. Optical neutral density filters are used instead of Formazin standards to check instrumental consistency in the field. Calibration with suspended solids concentrations is carried out using an automatic sampler whose operation is recorded together with turbidity on a two track recorder. The calibration curve is a second order polynomial in which turbidity explains 97% of the variance in suspended solids concentration.
