Abstract

SU(4) flavour symmetry arises naturally in the continuum limit of free Susskind fermions on a four-dimensional lattice. It may be broken by including a mass term for each flavour. These is an optimum choice for the lattice mass term in the gauge theory, which breaks the flavour symmetry to SU(2) without increasing the non-locality of the action.

Numerical simulations of two-dimensional QED

We describe the computer simulation of two-dimensional QED on a 64 × 64 Euclidean space-time lattice using the Susskind lattice fermion action. The order parameter for chiral symmetry breaking and the low-lying meson masses are calculated for both the model with two continuum flavours, which arises naturally in this formulation, and the model with one continuum flavour obtained by including a nonsymmetric mass term and setting one fermion mass equal to the cut-off. Results are compared with those obtained using the quenched approximation, and with analytic predictions.
Arbitrary spin fermions on the lattice

Lattice actions are constructed for free Dirac and Majorana fermions of arbitrary (halfinteger) spin using various extensions of the spin $12$ Kogut-Susskind, Kähler and Wilson formalisms. In each case, the spectrum degeneracy and preservation of gauge invariance is analysed, and the equivalence or non-equivalence to previously constructed actions is determined. The Kogut-Susskind and lattice Kähler actions are then written explicitly in terms of spinors to demonstrate how the degenerate fermions couple on the lattice and how the original spinorial actions are recovered (or to recovered) in the continuum limit. Both degenerate and non-degenerate mass terms are dealt with and the various U(1) invariances of the lattice actions are pointed out.

The massive Schwinger model with two flavours is studied using the local hamiltonian lattice Monte Carlo method. Chiral symmetry breaking is studied using the fermion condensate as order parameter. For a small ratio of the two fermion masses, degeneracy of the two flavours is found. For a large ratio of the masses, the heavy flavour decouples and the light fermion behaves like in the one flavour Schwinger model.
