Abstract

The infra-red spectra of 19 molybdates and 18 tungstates have been measured from 4000 to 250 cm−1. The identity of the samples was confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction. The spectra are generally sufficiently individual in detail to permit identification of the particular substance. The results are discussed in terms of the site symmetry of the anionic group.

A small hump at 674 cm−1 and 462 cm−1 represents Pb–O–Pb asymmetric bending and of Pb–O stretching respectively [Lee, D.H et al., 1999; Timar, V et al., 2008]. The characteristic sharp peak at 786 cm−1 is linked with the internal γ3 modes that are assigned with anti-symmetry stretch vibration of O–W–O on WO4 tetrahedron [Zhang, G et al., 2006; Frost, R. L et al., 2004; Gadsden, J.A et al., 1975; Clark, G. M et al., 1966]. The W atom on scheelite structure at the cages of the tetrahedral O atom and isolated each other and number of O ions around every Pb ion implies eight.
