2021, Climate Risk ManagementCitation Excerpt :Some communities are able to draw on traditional knowledge of locally adapted crop varieties and there is a long history among indigenous communities of maximizing the varied microclimates that exist at different elevations. For example, intercropping potatoes and maize is practiced to maximize space, reduce weeds and pests, and provide shading of companion planting at lower elevations (Gianoli et al., 2006; Ponce, 2020; Rhoades and Bebbington, 1990; Zimmerer, 1991). These cultivation strategies have provided households with a degree of adaptability, but the severity and unpredictability of climate change in the Andes in the past several decades has accelerated the need for more widespread and effective diversification practices (Escobal and Ponce, 2010; Ponce, 2020; Sperling et al., 2008).
