Abstract

The area of smart and functional materials is receiving increasing interest in terms of scientific and technological applications. In particular, those smart materials able to change form as a function of specific environments or physicochemical inputs—metamorphic materials—are relevant for medical applications including tissue engineering or drugs delivery, among others. The design and application of those materials follow, in many cases, a bioinspired approach in order to develop more realistic and effective therapeutic effects and functionalities.

This chapter will review the main effects, materials, and applications that are emerging from the so-called metamorphic materials.

EAPs consists of materials that experience a change in shape or dimension when exposed to an electrical field. The applied regime of voltage, current, waveform, duration and interval between pulses of the applied external stimulus allows for accurate control of electrical to mechanical energy transformation [6]. The beauty of EAPs is that for the most part, they are biocompatible and can form flexible interfaces with biological milieu.
