2022, Hormones and BehaviorCitation Excerpt :Similar studies have demonstrated that plasma CORT levels increase when anuran males are calling and are positively correlated with calling effort (Leary et al., 2008; Assis et al., 2012; Madelaire and Gomes, 2016). High CORT plasma levels during calling behavior in anurans might play an important role in mobilizing energetic reserves during this energetically expensive activity (Moore and Jessop, 2003; Landys et al., 2006; Carr, 2011; Peckett et al., 2011; Lattin and Romero, 2015). However, our results show that some males displaying high vocal effort can show low CORT plasma levels, indicating that the relationship between calling effort and CORT plasma levels can be more variable than predicted (Assis et al., 2012; Walkowski et al., 2019; Leary and Baugh, 2020).
