Angiotensin II

The renin–angiotensin system, via actions of its effector peptide angiotensin II, has unparalleled influences on body fluid homeostasis. Circulating angiotensin II acts on the brain to stimulate thirst, sodium appetite, vasopressin secretion, and increased sympathetic nerve activity, complementing its peripheral actions on the kidney and adrenal gland to maintain the water and sodium content of extracellular fluid. Blood-borne angiotensin II acts on angiotensin AT1 receptors in the subfornical organ and organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis to initiate its central actions. However, angiotensin II and angiotensin III may also be generated within the brain, and a separate central angiotensinergic system may also participate in regulating body fluids.
