Poster session: Wellness and public healthThe Relationship Among Alcohol Consumption, Dietary Intake, and Body Mass Index in Young Adults
Section snippets
Learning Outcome
To assess more fully the relationships among diet, alcohol consumption, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) in young adults.
Text
Little is known about the relationship of diet and weight to alcohol consumption in young adults. Dietary intake data were collected in 1995–1996 on 1,335 young adults (20–38 years) (62% female; 27% black) using a semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire (YAQ), and the Health Lifestyle-Behavior Questionnaire assessed alcohol consumption. BMI and WC were also determined. Alcohol consumption was higher (p=0.022) in males (76.2%) than females (70.9%) and higher (p=0.022) in whites (74.3%)
