Characterization of Pentose Phosphate Pathway in Embryo Suspensor of Tropaeolum majus

Summary

The role of pentose phosphate pathway has been examined in the embryo suspensor of Tropaeolum majus. Quantitative cytochemical data on glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and C6/C1 ratio revealed very high level of pentose phosphate pathway in the suspensor cells of early embryo. The role of pentose phosphate pathway in providing pentose sugars for nucleic acid biosynthesis and reducing power (NADPH) etc. for the biosynthetic reductions in relation to the suspensor is discussed.
