Previous studies on the effect of single parasitic infections generally focused on individual hosts or host populations, despite the fact that the majority of hosts are co-infected with multiple parasites [30]. Moreover, the number and specific identity of the co-infecting parasites are critical determinants of the relative impact of parasites on hosts [31].
