The intent of this study is (i) to analyze the response of a rotating disc, clamped at the inside and free at the perimeter, subjected to excitation produced by stationary point loads and restrained by stationary point springs and (ii) to investigate the effect of spring stiffness, number of spring and spring location on the frequency speed characteristics of the rotating disc. The purpose of this work is to develop fundamental understanding of the dynamics of guided rotating discs and to apply this knowledge to the analysis and design of guided circular saws used in the sawmilling industry.

Fig. 7 shows non-dimensional natural frequencies of the constrained, rotating annular plate obtained from the present solid model (solid lines). The natural frequencies closely match those from Hutton et al. [45], who investigated a guided sawblade modeled analytically as a thin plate-spring system with a high stiffness to approximate a rigid constraint (circles). Whether asymmetry arises from constraints (Fig. 7), prestress (Fig. 8), or other sources of asymmetry, it couples the various Fourier harmonics in the equation of motion Eq. (38).

Eigenvalue speed dependency has been investigated in many physical gyroscopic systems, such as spinning disks [1–6], axially moving materials [7,8], pipes conveying fluid [9], spinning disk-spindle systems [10–12], spinning rings [13,14], spinning shafts [15–17], and high-speed planetary gears [18,19].

The aim of the present paper is to investigate the effect of large displacements upon the response of elastically constrained disks considering rigid body degrees of freedom. Linear analysis [2] predicts the existence of critical speeds at which the resonant frequency of specific modes, as measured by a stationary observer, have a zero value. At such rotational speeds a space fixed constant force produces a resonant condition in the disk.

Beside data storage discs and brake discs discussed in the previous sections, there are also other applications, such as circular wood saws, clutches, gears and atomising discs. Hutton et al. [93] are early researchers of vibration of circular wood saws. Tian and Hutton [94] conducted a dynamic stability analysis of wood saws.
