2007, Kidney InternationalCitation Excerpt :In contrast, biopsies performed on diabetic patients documented the presence of MFT markers in the tubulointerstitium52-55 and in glomeruli associated with mesangial matrix expansion.52,53,56 EMT has also been identified in biopsies of patients with diabetic nephropathy55 and strong correlations were observed between EMT and fractional area of the interstitium (an index of tubulointerstitial fibrosis) and collagen type III.53,54 In fact, EMT, MFT, proteinuria, and the decline in renal function are tightly correlated, leading two groups to recommend αSMA immunostaining as a biomarker for renal fibrosis in patients with diabetes.53,54
