2017, GeomorphologyCitation Excerpt :Intact early- to mid-Holocene age raised beach sequences formed after isostatic uplift from the late Pleistocene LGM are located on bedrock highs on Clark and Bailey Peninsulas (Goodwin, 1996). The presence of these raised beaches indicates that the proposed Law Dome ice margin readvance in the Holocene did not represent a widespread ice margin advance, as it did not expand over or rework the post-LGM raised beaches (Goodwin, 1998). We propose that the ice-streams flowed around Bailey and Clark Peninsulas, Beall Island and other bedrock topographic highs, which remained as either exposed bedrock or were overlain by static or slow-flowing cold-based ice (e.g. Stokes and Clark, 1999; Bennett, 2003; Stokes et al., 2007).

In addition, the glacial geological field evidence shows that Antarctic deglaciation was completed by the mid Holocene (Goodwin, 1998; Ingólfsson et al., 1998) when gradients in the SH were flattest within the Holocene (Fig. 4). Current observations and field evidence show that the deglaciation in the NH high latitudes continues during the Holocene (Dyke, 2004; IPCC 4th Assessment Report—Climate Change, 2007) which is in agreement with the ongoing flattening of gradients in this hemisphere (Fig. 4).
