Abstract

The new Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes with tridentate Schiff base, the product of condensation of o-aminobenzyl alcohol with salicylaldehyde have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, electronic, EPR and Mössbauer spectra, thermal analysis, magnetic susceptibility and molecular weight measurements. Dimeric or polymeric structures for the investigated complexes were proposed. The interaction of the cobalt complex with dioxygen is also described.

The ESR spectra of Cu(II) complex 1 exhibited one broad band with geff = 2.09, proposing square planar geometry around Cu(II) ion in the complex such as concluded from its UV/Vis spectra [29]. Whereas, oxovanadium(IV) complex 4, displayed one band at geff = 2.09 indicating an octahedral geometry around VO(IV) ion corroborative with the results obtained from its IR and UV/Vis spectra [66]. The mass spectra of complexes 2, 3 and 4 as representative complexes (Figs. 5–7), Complexes 2, 3 and 4 provide good evidence for the molecular formulas from their highest mass peak at m/z 611, 461 and 664 respectively, which agree well with the proposed formula weights for the non-hydrated or non-solvated complexes: [Ni(L)2].2H2O (F. Wt = 647.33), [CoL(H2O)3]NO3.1.5CH3OH (F. Wt = 499.34), [VO(L)2].3H2O (F. Wt = 673.5).

Inspection of the data in Table 5 advocate, the following remarks: The negative values of ΔS* indicate that the activated complex is more ordered than the reactants and/or the reactions are slow [58]. This interpretation emphasized by the negative slope of the linear relationship of Egap versus ΔS*, Egap/eV = −6.43–0.058 ΔS*, r = 0.97, n = 5 all TGA points included.
