Publisher Summary

This chapter examines the literature dealing with the chemical composition of asphalt and changes in composition during environmental aging that affect durability-related properties. The characterization of the chemical functional types gives a fundamental approach to the relationships between asphalt composition and asphalt properties, and the performance of asphalts and asphalt-aggregate mixtures. Differences in the quality of asphalts depend on their crude oil sources because different crude oils have different chemical compositions. A durable asphalt is defined as one that (a) possesses the physical properties necessary to produce the desired initial product performance properties, and (b) is resistant to changes in physical properties during long-term, in-service environmental aging. Durability is determined by the physical properties of the asphalt, which are determined directly by chemical composition.

      Citation Excerpt :

The calculation showed that after 329 days the carbonyl and sulphoxide group concentrations had reached about 0.2 and 0.3 mol L−1 respectively. These values are of the same order as those reported previously for bitumens oxidised at 130 °C for 24 h [32] and after 15 years for asphalt surfacings in the field [11]. Over the period of the experiment an average of 33% of the bound elemental oxygen was present in carbonyl groups and 59% as sulphoxides.
