The introduction of intra-operative cell salvage in obstetric clinical practice: A review of the available evidence
2011, European Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive BiologyCitation Excerpt :A combination of cell-salvage washing and filtration appears to produce a blood product comparable with maternal blood, with the exception of the contamination by foetal RBCs [50,62,73,80,81,85,86] this could increase the risk of maternal alloimmunization in cases of RBC antigen incompatibilities between mother and foetus. Foetal RBCs were still present in the final product in several studies [62,73,81,85,86]; the degree of contamination was shown to range from 1 to 1.8–2% [50,80]. The contamination of the SB by foetal Rh-mismatched erythrocytes can be dealt with using anti-D immunoglobulin (Ig).
