Both stimulate common brain regions like the lateral hypothalamus, ventral tegmental area, prefrontal cortex or amygdala [8], reduce dopamine active transporter density [9] and activate dopaminergic neurons of the nucleus accumbens [10,11]. This dopaminergic activation caused by palatable food affects neural pathways involved in motivation and reward, such as drugs of abuse [12–14].
