2017, Progress in Retinal and Eye ResearchCitation Excerpt :Elasticity measurements of the human lens capsule have found that the Young's modulus of the capsule, a measure of material stiffness, decreases with age (Fisher, 1969, 1971), which may be a result of the increased capsule thickness with age (Fisher, 1969; Krag and Andreassen, 2003). In addition, measurements of lens stiffness differ between the nucleus and cortex, and the stiffness of these regions gradually increases with age (Fisher, 1971; Pau and Kranz, 1991; Tabandeh et al., 1994a, 1994b; Weeber et al., 2005). Consequently, it was suggested that presbyopia is due to changes in the lens, where a decreased elasticity of the lens capsule fails to reshape an increasingly stiffer lens substance during accommodation (Fisher and Pettet, 1973).

2012, Science of the Total EnvironmentCitation Excerpt :It is more toxic to mammals than cadmium, lead, copper or zinc, and is known to have caused many accidental, occupational and therapeutic poisonings since its discovery in 1861 (Smith and Carson, 1977; Mulkey and Oehme, 1993). The triad of gastroenteritis, polyneuropathy and alopecia is regarded as the classic syndrome of Tl poisoning (Liu, 1983; Feldman and Levisohn, 1993; Tabandeh et al., 1994; WHO/IPCS, 1996). Historically, Tl poisoning was noticed from industrial emission of coal burning and smelting (Smith and Carson, 1977; Brockhaus et al., 1981; Wells, 2001), and from criminal purpose by using Tl chemicals (Zhou, 1998).
