A soil sandwich technique demonstrated that the saprophytic growth of an isolate of Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici was favoured by low nitrogen levels (< 33 mg N kg−1). Effects of (NH4)2SO4, NaNO3 and Na2SO4 on fungal growth varied with rate of application and temperature.
