Abstract
SLOWLY but surely the mist which for many a year has enveloped the subject of studio materials and methods is beginning to lift. Probably one reason why it has hung about for so long is that nobody with the requisite knowledge coupled with due detachment has been willing to tackle the task of dissipation. The authors of this book have set about it with a will. Their first attempt was to contribute an article to Technical Studies in 1936 on 'supports' (substances like wood, canvas, paper, and so forth, upon which paintings are executed). Since then, they have followed it up with further papers to the same periodical, dealing with adhesives, pigments, solvents, tools and equipment. The volume now before us is composed of all this valuable data—rounded off with a glossary of scientific terms—collated and arranged for easy reference.
