Mutations affecting RNA Polymerase associated with Rifampicin Resistance in Escherichia coli

Abstract

THE rifamycins and their semi-synthetic derivatives such as rifampicin inhibited the RNA polymerase of E. coli1. Instead of interacting with the DNA, they appear to act on the RNA polymerase itself2, inhibiting the initiation of RNA synthesis after the RNA polymerase has already combined with the DNA3,4.
