Transfer of Nitrogen-fixation Genes by Conjugation in Klebsiella pneumoniae

Abstract

THE study of biological nitrogen fixation at the genetic level has been restricted by the lack of a suitable method of gene transfer in nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Mutants of Azotobacter vinelandii1,2 and Clostridium pasteurianum3 defective in nitrogen fixation have been isolated and characterized, but the transfer and mapping of the nitrogen fixation (nif) genes have not so far been possible.
