Abstract
THE nature and abundance of planktonic organic matter—the main source of crude oil—and moreover its preservation in sediments are affected by sea-level changes. Deposition of paralic coals might be also influenced. It is shown here that these considerations would explain large accumulations of coal or petroleum source rocks over relatively short periods of time.
