Time–temperature relations in the magnetization of assemblies of single domain grains

Abstract

A theory for important magnetization processes such as magnetic viscosity and the production of a moment on cooling in a magnetic field is presented here. The results for viscous phenomena differ from those obtained by others in that the time dependence of the viscosity depends on the size distribution of the magnetic grains. The moment produced on cooling in a magnetic field is calculated for an arbitrary distribution of grains for the first time. The effect of the cooling rate on the moment produced is found not only to be independent of that distribution but also of the temperature dependence of the saturation magnetization.
