Abstract
WITHIN the stable African plate there are several widely separated major volcanic provinces of Tertiary to Recent age. The largest of these, located along the East African-Ethiopean-Red Sea rift system are well known1,2 and figure prominently in modern studies of fracturing of the African plate and the development of new oceanic crust in the Red Sea2.
