Dramatic solvent effect on the luminescence of a dinuclear gold(i) complex of quinoline-8-thiolate

Abstract

The complex [{Au(PPh 3 )} 2 (8-qnS)]BF 4 (8-qnS = quinoline-8-thiolate) with intramolecular gold(I)...gold(I) distances of 2.991(2) and 3.081(2) Å in two independent asymmetric units, shows a long-lived emission at 640 nm which is quenched by polar solvents such as acetonitrile and alcohol.
