The reduction of ligating dinitrogen to yield a ligating N2H2 moiety

Abstract

Reaction of trans-[M(N2)2(dppe)2](M = Mo or W, dppe = Ph2PCH2CH2PPh2) with hydrogen halides (HY) yields [MY2(N2H2)(dppe)2] which, when M = W and Y = Cl, gives salts [WCl(N2H2)(dppe)2]Z (Z = BPh4 or ClO4) with sodium tetraphenylborate or lithium perchlorate; [WH(N2)2(dppe)2][HCl2] may also be obtained by reaction of trans-[W(N2)2(dppe)2] with hydrogen chloride.
