Rearrangement of a metal (η2-alkyne) complex to a metal vinylidene and subsequent reaction of the metal vinylidene to regenerate the alkyne

Abstract

The η2-alkyne complex (C5H5)(PMe3)2Ru(HC[triple bond, length half m-dash]CMe)+PF6, which was isolated from a reaction of HC[triple bond, length half m-dash]CMe with (C5H5)(PMe3)2RuCl, undergoes first-order rearrangement to give (C5H5)(PMe3)2Ru[double bond, length half m-dash]C[double bond, length half m-dash]C(H)Me + PF6; at higher tempreatures in MeCN, this vinylidene complex cleanly regenerates HC[triple bond, length half m-dash]CMe and forms (C5H5)(PMe3)2Ru(MeCN)+PF6.
