Reactions of bis(trifluoromethyl)mercury: the synthesis and properties of methyl(trifluoromethyl)-stannanes and -plumbanes

Abstract

The reactions of Hg(CF3)2 with Group 4 organometallic compounds MMe4(M = Si,Ge,Sn, or Pb), MMe3(CF3)(M = Sn or Pb), and M2R6(M = Si or Sn, R = Me; M = Ge, Sn, or Pb, R = Ph) have been investigated. Exchange of one CF3, group with a methyl group occurs for SnMe4, SnMe3(CF3), and PbMe4; the lead derivative reacts much more readily than the tin compound. Cleavage of the metal-metal bond with formation of MR3(CF3) has been achieved for Sn2Me6, but does not take place for Si2Me6 and the hexaphenyl derivatives. The reactions of PbMe3(CF3) with bromine, hydrogen chloride, and water have been investigated together with its thermal stability. Spectroscopic properties are discussed for mixed trifluoromethyl-methyl derivatives of Group 4.
