Kinetic acidity dependence in certain oxidation reactions. Part III. Oxidation of citric acid by quinquevalent vanadium ion
Abstract
The kinetics of the oxidation of citric acid by quinquevalent vanadium ion in solutions of sulphuric and perchloric acid, and in the absence of these acids are studied. The reaction is first order with respect to quinquevalent vanadium ion and citric acid. The reaction is acid-catalysed; the rate is faster in perchloric acid than in sulphuric acid, though at lower concentrations of these acids the rates are almost equal, and are measurable in the absence of these mineral acids. The inadequacy of the different relations correlating the rate with the acid concentration is brought out. The mechanism is discussed and the activation parameters are reported.
