Forces due to solvent structure in particle interactions: the one-dimensional problem

Abstract

Exact solute–solvent and solute–solute correlation functions are obtained for the problem of two solute molecules immersed in a one-dimensional fluid. The features of the indirect solventmediated interaction which emerge confirm the correctness of earlier three-dimensional studies based on a combination of the PY or HNC approximations. The analysis provides a strong hint regarding the origin of observed repulsive forces.
