A technique for automatic protection switching in conjunction with a capability for intercommunications between customers in a passive optical network is proposed and experimentally verified. Protection switching against fibre breaks is carried out using a secondary fibre that enables inter-customer networking using RF subcarrier multiplexed transmission along with the upstream transmission to the central office at baseband.
