Abstract

Eight dry extracts of the roots of Harpagophytum procumbens DC were prepared and tested for analgesic and antiphlogistic effects in five animal models after oral respectively oral and intravenous application in two dose groups.

Some analgesic and antiphlogistic actions could be observed with the methanolic basic extract, the butanolic part of the methanolic extract and the fluid extract.

The pharmacological tests of pure „Harpagosid” showed no better effects than the other extracts.

Semichronic animal models showed better results than acute animal experiments when Harpagopytum extracts were tested for antiphlogistic activity.

With the exception of the high purified Harpagosidglycoside, which acted slightly toxic after intravenous application all the other extracts tested could be classified as non toxic.
