CACTUS ALKALOIDS V. ISOLATION OF HORDENINE AND N–METHYLTYRAMINE FROM ARIOCARPUS RETUSUS

Summary
References to the primitive medicinal uses of the cactus Ariocarpus retusus indicated that phytochemical investigations might be fruitful. Alkaloid extracts were made and examined with thin–layer chromatography. Two alkaloids, hordenine and N–methyltyramine, were detected and isolated in crystalline form by using dry–column chromatography. The significance of the presence of these alkaloids in the plant is discussed.
Zusammenfassung
Die Alkaloide des in bestimmten Gebieten Mexikos als 'peyote' bezeichneten und als berauschend benutzten Kaktus Ariocarpus retusus wurden DC untersucht. Es wurden Hordenin und N–methyl–tyramin isoliert. Beide Alkaloide sind bereits von anderen Pflanzenarten und –familien bekannt und zeigen nur eine schwache sympathomimetische „Wirkung.
