Summary

An assay process involving the separation of the alkaloids by thin–layer chro–matography and subsequent ultraviolet spectrophotometric estimation after quantitative elution of the individual alkaloids is proposed for R. caffra Sond. root bark. The sample investigated yielded 0.10 per cent ajmalicine, 1.21 per cent ajmaline, 0.01 per cent rescinnamine, 0.07 per cent reserpine and 0.90 per cent serpentine, the weaker bases comprising 8.24 per cent of the total alkaloids estimated.
