Summary

The yield of leaves of Digitalis lanata grown in Egypt and their content of cardiac glycosides were investigated, both qualitatively using thin–layer chromatography, and quantitatively by the colorimetric method using Baljet reagent. The weight of dried leaves per plant increased gradually with growth of the plant until the early flowering stage when it showed no marked change in the remaining stages. Maximum yield of glycosides per gram dried leaves (18.1 mg) as well as per plant (258.8 mg) was obtained from leaves collected from plants in the stage just before flowering.
