Summary

Worldwide schizophrenia belongs to the group of illnesses in which (by comparison) most years of a patient life are spent in disablement. Looking back on 30 years of research of psychotherapy it becomes evident that alongside clinical pharmacology, psychotherapeutic interventions determine the effectiveness of successful treatments. Using evidence based psychotherapy the progress of symptoms, the relapse prophylaxis and the rate of re-hospitalization can be significantly improved. The distress of the affected and their relatives can be minimized and costs to society reduced. The entry of the attenuated psychosis syndrome into the DSM V is an important step and gives reason to hope for a development in which specialized help for young people with high psychosis risk factors will be available in Germany too.
