Dogs and protozoan zoonoses.

Abstract

Protozoan parasites of dogs are discussed, with the reference to the importance of dogs as hosts for zoonoses. Notes are given on intestinal parasites (flagellates, amoebae and sporozoa), parasites of blood and other tissues, including Leishmania spp. and Trypanosoma spp., and microsporidia. It is concluded that T. cruzi and L. infantum are the most important human protozoan pathogens whose source is the dog.
