Abstract
The s-state Potts model with a gaussian distribution of pair couplings is found to possess, in the infinite-range limit, a replica symmetric (RS) solution that exhibits a spin glass transition which appears to be second order for s<6 and first order above. The solution is not stable in the spin glass phase, and is only stable throughout the paramagnetic (PM) phase for s<or=2. For s>2, the stability of the PM phase breaks down above the transition temperature indicated by the RS solution suggesting a first-order transition which, however, cannot be located by the RS solution.
