Abstract

The problem is discussed of assigning a single effective time constant for thermal, diffusion and other relaxation processes in which the time dependence departs markedly from a simple exponential form. The practical advantages of a 'first-moment' definition are pointed out and illustrated by examples from thermal conduction and the preferential sputtering of binary alloys.
