Abstract

Measurements have been made of the probability that an electron emitted from the cathode will initiate the electrical breakdown of a uniform-field discharge gap. With an electrode separation of 1 mm and the discharge gap filled with nitrogen at a pressure of 200 torr the probability approached unity at a voltage 25% in excess of the static breakdown voltage. This result is in agreement with the calculated breakdown probability.
