Abstract

Fracture of a reinforcing element of any length can be prevented by progressively decoupling the element from the rest of the composite structure as the tensile load carried by the element increases. The design and fabrication of one type of reinforcing element possessing such stress-controlled decoupling characteristics is described and its behaviour is compared with that predicted from simple theory over a wide range of conditions.
