Abstract

The characterization of measurement as an empirical process implies that the general properties intended to be measured must in some sense exist, and the existence of a general property is then a necessary condition for its measurability. This paper explores the problem of justifying the existence of properties by identifying two general cases, related to direct asynchronous methods and indirect methods of measurement, and discussing the complementary issues they pose.
