The significance of the mass formula of French et al. is investigated. It is shown that any relation of the type $M=a+M_{0}n(n+1\mathrm{})\mathrm{}$ with different suitable choices of the constants $a$ and $M_0$ will give the masses of the baryons, provided gaps in several of the sequences are allowed, as has been done by French et al.
