Abstract

We have obtained the resonance Raman spectrum of ZrS2 and HfS2 using krypton- and argon-ion laser lines. The resonating electronic transition is the L2 to L1+ transition, which we determine to occur at 2.47±0.05 eV in ZrS2. We have observed the Eu(LO) mode in ZrS2 at 350±5 cm1 and also its second-order spectrum. In the case of HfS2, we have observed the A2u(LO) mode at 325±2 cm1 and a second-order spectrum in the region of 570660 cm1. The phonon structure of both materials is presented.
