Abstract
Classical-trajectory calculations using an ion-surface potential which is represented as a sum of ion-atom pair potentials plus an attractive imagelike potential are compared to experimental results for the scattering of and from Cu(110) in the energy range 100 eV≤≤400 eV. The strong focusing of ion trajectories on this surface greatly enhances the sensitivity of the scattering to the form of the ion-surface interaction potential. We achieve very good agreement between calculated and experimental spectra using pair potentials computed within the Hartree-Fock approximation.
